The Brow of the Hill near Nazareth
"The Brow of the Hill near Nazareth"
-- by James Tissot

Monday of the Third Week of Lent

FIRST READING: 2 Kings 5:1-15

1 Naaman, general of the army of the king of Syria, was a great man with his master, and honourable: for by him the Lord gave deliverance to Syria: and he was a valiant man and rich, but a leper.
2 Now there had gone out robbers from Syria, and had led away captive out of the land of Israel a little maid, and she waited upon Naaman's wife.
3 And she said to her mistress: I wish my master had been with the prophet, that is in Samaria: he would certainly have healed him of the leprosy which he hath.
4 Then Naaman went in to his lord, and told him, saying: Thus and thus said tile girl from the land of Israel.
5 And the king of Syria sad to him: Go, and I will send a letter to the king of Israel. And he departed, and took with him ten talents of silver, and six thousand pieces of gold, and ten changes of raiment,
6 And brought the letter to the king of Israel, in these words: When thou shalt receive this letter, know that I have sent to thee Naaman my servant, that thou mayest heal him of his leprosy.
7 And when the king of Israel had read the letter, he rent his garments, and said: Am I God, to be able to kill and give life, that this man hath sent to me, to heal a man of his leprosy? mark, and see how he seeketh occasions against me.
8 And when Elisha the man of God had heard this, to wit, that the king of Israel had rent his garments, he sent to him, saying: Why hast thou rent thy garments? let him come to me, and let him know that there is a prophet in Israel.
9 So Naaman came with his horses and chariots, and stood at the door of the house of Elisha:
10 And Elisha sent a messenger to him, saying: Go, and wash seven times in the Jordan, and thy flesh shall recover health, and thou shalt be clean.
11 Naaman was angry and went away, saying: I thought he would hare come out to me, and standing would hare invoked the name of the Lord his God, and touched with his hand the place of the leprosy, and healed me.
12 Are not the Abana, and the Pharphar, rivers of Damascus, better than all the waters of Israel, that I may wash in them, and be made clean? So as he turned, and was going away with indignation,
13 His servants came to him, and said to him: Father, if the prophet had bid thee do some great thing, surely thou shouldst have done it: how much rather what he now hath said to thee: Wash, and thou shalt he clean?
14 Then he went down, and washed in the Jordan seven times: according to the word of the man of God, and his flesh was restored, like the flesh of a little child, and he was made clean.
15 And returning to the man of God with all his train, be came, and stood before him, and said: In truth, I know there is no other God in all the earth, but only in Israel: I beseech thee therefore take a blessing of thy servant.

PSALM: Psalms 42:2-3; 43:3-4

2 As the hart panteth after the fountains of water; so my soul panteth after thee, O God.
3 My soul hath thirsted after the strong living God; when shall I come and appear before the face of God?
3 Send forth thy light and thy truth: they have conducted me, and brought me unto thy holy hill, and into thy tabernacles.
4 And I will go in to the altar of God: to God who giveth joy to my youth.

GOSPEL: Luke 4:24-30

24 And he said: Amen I say to you, that no prophet is accepted in his own country.
25 In truth I say to you, there were many widows in the days of Elijah in Israel, when heaven was shut up three years and six months, when there was a great famine throughout all the earth.
26 And to none of them was Elijah sent, but to Sarepta of Sidon, to a widow woman.
27 And there were many lepers in Israel in the time of Elisha the prophet: and none of them was cleansed but Naaman the Syrian.
28 And all they in the synagogue, hearing these things, were filled with anger.
29 And they rose up and thrust him out of the city; and they brought him to the brow of the hill, whereon their city was built, that they might cast him down headlong.
30 But he passing through the midst of them, went his way.

Catholic Mass Readings For Thursday, June 26, 2014

FIRST READING: 2 Kings 24: 8 - 17

8 Jehoiachin was eighteen years old when he succeeded his father, and he reigned for three months in Jerusalem. His mother was Nehushta, daughter of Elnathan of Jerusalem.
9 Jehoiachin treated Yahweh badly, as his father had done.
10 At that time, the officials of Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, came to attack Jerusalem, surrounding the city.
11 Nebuchadnezzar came while the city was being besieged by his men.
12 Jehoiachin, king of Judah, surrendered together with his mother, his servants, his leaders and the palace officials. It was the eighth year of the reign of Nebuchadnezzar.
13 Nebuchadnezzar captured them and he took away the treasures of the House of Yahweh and of the king's house. He also destroyed all the objects of gold which Solomon, king of Israel, had made for the sanctuary of Yahweh. So the word Yahweh had spoken, was fulfilled.
14 Nebuchadnezzar carried off into exile all the leaders and prominent men, the blacksmiths and locksmiths, all the men of valor fit for war. A total of ten thousand were exiled to Babylon. Only the poorest sector of the population was left.
15 Nebuchaddnezzar also carried away Jehoiachin, with his mother, his wives, the ministers of the palace, and the prominent men of the land.
16 So all the prominent people, numbering seven thousand, the blacksmiths, numbering a thousand, and all the men fit for war were deported to Babylon by the king of Babylon.
17 He made Mattaniah, Jehoiachin's uncle, king of Jerusalem, in place of Jehoiachin. And he changed his name to Zedekiah.

PSALM: Psalms 79: 1 - 5, 8 - 9

1 O God, the pagans have invaded your inheritance; they have defiled your holy temple and reduced Jerusalem to rubble.
2 They have given your servants' corpses to the birds, and the flesh of your saints to the beasts of the earth.
3 They have poured out the blood of your faithful like water around Jerusalem, and there was no one to bury them.
4 Mocked and reviled by those around us, we are scorned by our neighbors.
5 How long will this last, O Lord? Will you be angry forever? Will your wrath always burn to avenge your rights?
8 Do not remember against us the sins of our fathers. Let your compassion hurry to us, for we have been brought very low.
9 Help us, God, our savior, for the glory of your name; forgive us for the sake of your name.

GOSPEL: Matthew 7: 21 - 29

21 Not everyone who says to me: Lord! Lord! will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my heavenly Father.
22 Many will say to me on that day, "Lord, Lord, did we not speak in your name? Did we not cast out devils and perform many miracles in your name?"
23 Then I will tell them openly: I have never known you; away from me, you evil people!
24 "So, then, anyone who hears these words of mine and acts accordingly is like a wise man, who built his house on rock.
25 The rain poured, the rivers flooded, and the wind blew and struck that house, but it did not collapse because it was built on rock.
26 But anyone who hears these words of mine and does not act accordingly, is like a fool who built his house on sand.
27 The rain poured, the rivers flooded, and the wind blew and struck that house; it collapsed, and what a terrible fall that was!"
28 When Jesus had finished this discourse, the crowds were struck by the way he taught,
29 because he taught with authority unlike their teachers of the Law.

FIRST READING: 2 Kings 22: 8 - 13; 23: 1 - 3

8 At that moment Hilkiah, the high priest, said to Shaphan, the secretary, "I have found the Book of the Law in the House of Yahweh." And he entrusted the Book to Shaphan who read it.
9 Then Shaphan went to the king and said, "We have gathered the money in the House, and this has been turned over to the caretakers of the House to make the repairs."
10 And Shaphan added, "The priest Hilkiah has turned over a book to me." And Shaphan read the book to the king.
11 When the king heard the contents of the book, he tore his clothes and
12 commanded Hilkiah, Ahikam, Achbor, the secretary Shaphan, and Asaiah, his minister, to do the following,
13 "Go and consult Yahweh about the threats in this book which you have found. Consult him for me, for the people and for the whole of Judah, since our fathers did not listen to what this book says nor to its ordinances. This is why the anger of Yahweh is ready to burn against us."
1 The king summoned to his side all the leaders of Judah and Jerusalem.
2 Then he went up to the House of Yahweh followed by all the people of Judah and Jerusalem. The priests with the prophets and all the people went with him, from the youngest to the oldest. When all were gathered, he read to them the book of the Law found in the House of Yahweh.
3 The king stood by the pillar; he made a covenant in the presence of Yahweh, promising to follow him, to keep his commandments and laws, and to respect his ordinances. He promised to keep this covenant according to what was written in the book with all his heart and with all his soul. And all the people promised with him.

PSALM: Psalms 119: 33 - 37, 40

33 Explain to me, O Lord, your commandments, and I will be ever faithful to them.
34 Give me understanding, that I may observe your law with all my heart.
35 Guide me in obeying your instructions, for my pleasure lies in them.
36 Incline my heart to follow your will and not my own selfish desire.
37 Turn my eyes away from vanities and direct them to your life-giving word.
40 Oh, how I long for your precepts! Renew my life in your righteousness.

GOSPEL: Matthew 7: 15 - 20

15 Beware of false prophets: they come to you in sheep's clothing but inside they are wild wolves.
16 You will recognize them by their fruits. Do you ever pick grapes from thornbushes, or figs from thistles?
17 A good tree always produces good fruit, a rotten tree produces bad fruit.
18 A good tree cannot produce bad fruit and a rotten tree cannot bear good fruit.
19 Any tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown in the fire.
20 So you will know them by their fruit.

FIRST READING: 2 Kings 17: 5 - 8, 13 - 15, 18

5 The army of the king of Asshur subjected the whole of Israel, and they came to Samaria and laid siege to it for three years.
6 In the ninth year of Hoshea, the king of Assyria captured Samaria, exiled the Israelites to Asshur and made them settle in Halah, at the banks of Habor, the river of Gozan, as well as in the cities of the Medes.
7 This happened because the children of Israel had sinned against Yahweh, their God, who had brought them out of the land of Egypt, where they were subject to Pharaoh, but they had turned back to other gods.
8 They followed the customs of the nations which Yahweh had driven out before them.
13 Yahweh warned Israel and Judah through the mouth of every prophet and seer, saying: "Turn from your evil ways and keep my commandments and precepts according to the laws which I commanded your fathers and which I have sent to you by my servants, the prophets."
14 But they did not listen and refused as did their fathers who did not believe in Yahweh, their God.
15 They despised his statutes and the covenant he had made with their fathers, and the warnings he had given them. They went after worthless idols and they themselves became worthless, following the nations which surrounded them, in spite of what Yahweh had said, "Do not do as they do."
18 So Yahweh became indignant with Israel and cast them far away from his presence, leaving only the tribe of Judah.

PSALM: Psalms 60: 3 - 5, 12 - 13

3 O God, you have rejected us and have broken our defenses; you have been angry, but now turn back to us.
4 You have shaken the land and torn it open; mend its cracks for it totters.
5 You have made your people suffer; you have given us wine that makes us stagger.
12 Have you not rejected us, O God? You no longer go with our armies.
13 Give us aid against the foe, for human help is not worth a straw.

GOSPEL: Matthew 7: 1 - 5

1 Do not judge and you will not be judged.
2 In the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and the measure you use for others will be used for you.
3 Why do you look at the speck in your brother's eye and not see the plank in your own eye?
4 How can you say to your brother: 'Come, let me take the speck from your eye,' as long as that plank is in your own?
5 Hypocrite, take first the plank out of your own eye, then you will see clear enough to take the speck out of your brother's eye.

FIRST READING: 2 Kings 11: 1 - 4, 9 - 18, 20

1 When Athaliah, the mother of Ahaziah, saw that her son had died, she was determined to wipe out all the descendants of the king.
2 But Jehosheba, the daughter of King Joram and sister of Ahaziah, took Joash, her nephew, and brought him away from among the king's sons who were about to be killed, and put him with his wet nurse in the bedroom. Thus she hid him from Athaliah, so that the boy was saved.
3 And Joash remained hidden in the House of Yahweh for six years while Athaliah reigned over the land.
4 In the seventh year, Jehoiada the chief priest, summoned the officers of the royal guard and of the Carites to the House of Yahweh. After concluding a pact with them under oath, he showed them the king's son.
9 The commanders of the guards did what Jehoiada the priest had told them to do and they showed up with all their men, those who were to go off duty on the sabbath as well as those who were to come on duty on that day.
10 Jehoiada entrusted to the officers the spears and shields of King David which were in the House of Yahweh.
11 And then the guards stood from the southern corner of the house to the north, surrounding the altar and the House of Yahweh.
12 Then Jehoiada, the priest, brought out the king's son, crowned him and put the bracelets on him, then proclaimed and consecrated him king. All clapped their hands, shouting and crying out, "Long live the king!"
13 When Athaliah heard the noise of the people, she approached the crowd surrounding the House of Yahweh.
14 The king was standing by the pillar, according to the custom, and the officers and the trumpeters were with him. The people were filled with joy and they were blowing trumpets. On seeing this, Athaliah tore her clothes and cried out, "Treason, treason!"
15 Jehoiada the priest commanded the officers, "Surround her and bring her out to the courtyard, and kill anyone who tries to defend her." He gave this order, because he thought, "She should not die in the House of Yahweh."
16 They brought her out, and when they reached the palace of the king by the horses' entrance, there they killed her.
17 Jehoiada made a covenant between Yahweh and the king and the people so they would be the people of Yahweh.
18 All the citizens went to the temple of Baal and destroyed it. They broke the altars and the images into pieces, and killed Mattan, the priest of Baal, before his altar. Then Jehoiada, the priest, posted guards over the House of Yahweh.
20 All the citizens were happy and the city was at peace. Now regarding Athaliah, she had died by the sword in the king's palace.

PSALM: Psalms 132: 11 - 14, 17 - 18

11 The Lord swore to David a promise, and he will remain true to it: "I will keep your descendance on your throne.
12 If your sons keep my covenant and the decrees I have taught them, their sons, too, will sit forever upon your throne."
13 For the Lord has chosen Zion; he has desired it for his dwelling:
14 "This is my resting place forever; this I prefer, here will I dwell.
17 From here a savior shall come forth, a son of David; here shall shine forever the lamp of my anointed.
18 In shame will I clothe his enemies, but upon his head a crown shall shine."

GOSPEL: Matthew 6: 19 - 23

19 Do not store up treasure for yourself here on earth where moth and rust destroy it, and where thieves can steal it.
20 Store up treasure for yourself with God, where no moth or rust can destroy nor thief come and steal it.
21 For where your treasure is, there also your heart will be.
22 The lamp of the body is the eye; if your eyes are sound, your whole body will be in the light.
23 If your eyes are diseased your whole body will be in darkness. Then, if your light has become darkness, how dark will be the darkest part of you!

Catholic Mass Readings For Wednesday, June 18, 2014

FIRST READING: 2 Kings 2: 1, 6 - 14

1 Yahweh took Elijah up to heaven in a whirlwind. It happened this way: Elijah and Elisha had left Gilgal.
6 Elijah said once more to Elisha, "Stay here, I beg you, for Yahweh is only sending me to the Jordan." But Elisha answered, "I swear by Yahweh and by your life that I will never leave you." And as they went on their way,
7 fifty fellow prophets of Jericho followed them at a certain distance.
When Elijah and Elisha stood by the Jordan
8 Elijah took his mantle, rolled it, and struck the water with it. The water parted to both sides and they crossed over on dry ground.
9 After they had crossed, Elijah said to Elisha, "What shall I do for you before I am taken away from you? Ask me." Elisha said, "Grant that I may have the best of your spirit."
10 Elijah answered, "Your request is most difficult. Yet if you see me while I am being taken from you, then you shall have it. But if not, you shall not have it."
11 As they were talking on the way, a chariot of fire with horses of fire stood between them, and Elijah was taken up to heaven in a whirlwind.
12 Elisha saw him and cried out, "Father, my father, chariots of Israel and its horsemen!"
When Elisha lost sight of him, he took hold of his own clothes and tore them.
13 He then picked up the mantle which had fallen from Elijah and returned to the banks of the Jordan.
14 There he struck the water with the mantle, but it did not part. So he asked, "Where is Yahweh, the God of Elijah?" And as he struck the water again it parted. Elisha crossed over.

PSALM: Psalms 31: 20 - 21, 24

20 How great is the goodness which you have stored for those who fear you, which you show, for all to see, to those who take refuge in you!
21 In the shelter of your presence you hide them from human wiles; you keep them in your dwelling, safe from the intrigues of wagging tongues.
24 Love the Lord, all you his saints! The Lord preserves his faithful, but he fully requites the arrogant.

GOSPEL: Matthew 6: 1 - 6, 16 - 18

1 Be careful not to make a show of your righteousness before people. If you do so, you do not gain anything from your Father in heaven.
2 When you give something to the poor, do not have it trumpeted before you, as do those who want to be seen in the synagogues and in the streets in order to be praised by the people. I assure you, they have been already paid in full.
3 If you give something to the poor, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing,
4 so that your gift remains really secret. Your Father who sees what is kept secret, will reward you.
5 When you pray, do not be like those who want to be seen. They love to stand and pray in the synagogues or on street corners to be seen by everyone. I assure you, they have already been paid in full.
6 When you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father who is with you in secret; and your Father who sees what is kept secret will reward you.
16 When you fast, do not put on a miserable face as do the hypocrites. They put on a gloomy face, so people can see they are fasting. I tell you this: they have been paid in full already.
17 When you fast, wash your face and make yourself look cheerful,
18 because you are not fasting for appearances or for people, but for your Father who sees beyond appearances. And your Father, who sees what is kept secret will reward you.

2 Now there had gone out robbers from Syria, and had led away captive out of the land of Israel a little maid, and she waited upon Naaman's wife.

4 Then Naaman went in to his lord, and told him, saying: Thus and thus said tile girl from the land of Israel.
5 And the king of Syria sad to him: Go, and I will send a letter to the king of Israel. And he departed, and took with him ten talents of silver, and six thousand pieces of gold, and tell changes of raiment,
6 And brought the letter to the king of Israel, in these words: When thou shalt receive this letter, know that I have sent to thee Naaman my servant, that thou mayest heal him of his leprosy.
7 And when the king of Israel had read the letter, he rent his garments, and said: Am I God, to be able to kill and give life, that this man hath sent to me, to heal a man of his leprosy? mark, and see how he seeketh occasions against me.
8 And when Eliseus the man of God had heard this, to wit, that the king of Israel had rent his garments, he sent to him, saying: Why hast thou rent thy garments? let him come to me, and let him know that there is a prophet in Israel.
9 So Naaman came with his horses and chariots, and stood at the door of the house of Eliseus:
10 And Eliseus sent a messenger to him, saying: Go, and wash seven times in the Jordan, and thy flesh shall recover health, and thee shalt be clean.

PSALM: Psalms 42: 2 - 3; 43: 3 - 4

2 As the hart panteth after the fountains of water; so my soul panteth after thee, O God.
3 My soul hath thirsted after the strong living God; when shall I come and appear before the face of God?
3 Send forth thy light and thy truth: they have conducted me, and brought me unto thy holy hill, and into thy tabernacles.
4 And I will go in to the altar of God: to God who giveth joy to my youth.

GOSPEL: Luke 4: 24 - 30

24 And he said: Amen I say to you, that no prophet is accepted in his own country.
25 In truth I say to you, there were many widows in the days of Elias in Israel, when heaven was shut up three years and six months, when there was a great famine throughout all the earth.
26 And to none of them was Elias sent, but to Sarepta of Sidon, to a widow woman.
27 And there were many lepers in Israel in the time of Eliseus the prophet: and none of them was cleansed but Naaman the Syrian.
28 And all they in the synagogue, hearing these things, were filled with anger.
29 And they rose up and thrust him out of the city; and they brought him to the brow of the hill, whereon their city was built, that they might cast him down headlong.
30 But he passing through the midst of them, went his way.
