"The Healing of the Officer's Son" -- by James Tissot
"The Healing of the Officer's Son"
-- by James Tissot

Monday of the Fourth Week of Lent

FIRST READING: Isaiah 65: 17-21

17 For behold I create new heavens, and a new earth: and the former things shall not be in remembrance, and they shall not come upon the heart.
18 But you shall be glad and rejoice for ever in these things, which I create: for behold I create Jerusalem a rejoicing, and the people thereof joy.
19 And I will rejoice in Jerusalem, and joy in my people, and the voice of weeping shall no more be heard in her, nor the voice of crying.
20 There shall no more be an infant of days there, nor an old man that shall not fill up his days: for the child shall die a hundred years old, and the sinner being a hundred years old shall be accursed.
21 And they shall build houses, and inhabit them; and they shall plant vineyards, and eat the fruits of them.

PSALM: Psalms 30: 2, 4-6, 11-13

2 I will extol thee, O Lord, for thou hast upheld me: and hast not made my enemies to rejoice over me.
4 Thou hast brought forth, O Lord, my soul from hell: thou hast saved me from them that go down into the pit.
5 Sing to the Lord, O ye his saints: and give praise to the memory of his holiness.
6 For wrath is in his indignation; and life in his good will. In the evening weeping shall have place, and in the morning gladness.
11 The Lord hath heard, and hath had mercy on me: the Lord became my helper.
12 Thou hast turned for me my mourning into joy: thou hast cut my sackcloth, and hast compassed me with gladness:
13 To the end that my glory may sing to thee, and I may not regret: O Lord my God, I will give praise to thee for ever.

VERSE BEFORE THE GOSPEL: Amos 5: 14

Seek ye good, and not evil, that you may live,
and the LORD the God of hosts will be with you.

GOSPEL: John 4: 43-54

43 Now after two days, he departed thence, and went into Galilee.
44 For Jesus himself gave testimony that a prophet hath no honour in his own country.
45 And when he was come into Galilee, the Galileans received him, having seen all the things he had done at Jerusalem on the festival day; for they also went to the festival day.
46 He came again therefore into Cana of Galilee, where he made the water wine. And there was a certain ruler, whose son was sick at Capharnaum.
47 He having heard that Jesus was come from Judea into Galilee, went to him, and prayed him to come down, and heal his son; for he was at the point of death.
48 Jesus therefore said to him: Unless you see signs and wonders, you believe not.
49 The ruler saith to him: Lord, come down before that my son die.
50 Jesus saith to him: Go thy way; thy son liveth. The man believed the word which Jesus said to him, and went his way.
51 And as he was going down, his servants met him; and they brought word, saying, that his son lived.
52 He asked therefore of them the hour wherein he grew better. And they said to him: Yesterday, at the seventh hour, the fever left him.
53 The father therefore knew, that it was at the same hour that Jesus said to him, Thy son liveth; and himself believed, and his whole house.
54 This is again the second miracle that Jesus did, when he was come out of Judea into Galilee.

Catholic Mass Readings For Saturday, July 05, 2014

FIRST READING: Amos 9: 11 - 15

11 On that day I shall restore the fallen hut of David and wall up its breaches and raise its ruined walls and so build it as in days of old.
12 They shall conquer the remnant of Edom and the neighboring nations upon which my name has been called." Thus says Yahweh, the one who will do this.
13 Yahweh says also, "The days are coming when the plowman will overtake the reaper and the treader of grapes overtake the sower. The mountains shall drip sweet wine and all the hills shall melt.
14 I shall bring back the exiles of my people Israel; they will rebuild the desolate cities and dwell in them. They will plant vineyards and drink their wine; they will have orchards and eat their fruit.
15 I shall plant them in their own country and they shall never again be rooted up from the land which I have given them," says Yahweh your God.

PSALM: Psalms 85: 9 - 14

9 Would that I hear God's proclamation, that he promise peace to his people, his saints - lest they come back to their folly.
10 Yet his salvation is near to those who fear him, and his Glory will dwell in our land.
11 Love and faithfulness have met; righteousness and peace have embraced.
12 Faithfulness will reach up from the earth while justice bends down from heaven.
13 The Lord will give what is good, and our land will yield its fruit.
14 Justice will go before him, and peace will follow along his path.

GOSPEL: Matthew 9: 14 - 17

14 Then the disciples of John came to him with the question, "How is it that we and the Pharisees fast on many occasions, but not your disciples?"
15 Jesus answered them, "How can you expect wedding guests to mourn as long as the bridegroom is with them? Time will come when the bridegroom will be taken away from them, then they will fast.
16 No one patches an old coat with a piece of unshrunken cloth, for the patch will shrink and tear an even bigger hole in the coat.
17 Besides you don't put new wine in old wineskins. If you do, the wineskins will burst and the wine be spilt. No, you put new wine in fresh skins; then both are preserved."

Catholic Mass Readings For Friday, July 04, 2014

FIRST READING: Amos 8: 4 - 6, 9 - 12

4 Hear this, you who trample on the needy to do away with the weak of the land.
5 You who say, "When will the new moon or the sabbath feast be over that we may open the store and sell our grain? Let us lower the measure and raise the price; let us cheat and tamper with the scales,
6 and even sell the refuse with the whole grain. We will buy up the poor for money and the needy for a pair of sandals."
9 Yahweh says, "On that day I will make the sun go down at noon and darken the earth in broad daylight.
10 I will turn your festivals into mourning and all your singing into wailing. Everyone will mourn, covered with sackcloth and every head will be shaved. I will make them mourn as for an only son and bring their day to a bitter end."
11 Yahweh says, "Days are coming when I will send famine upon the land, not hunger for bread or thirst for water, but for hearing the word of Yahweh.
12 Men will stagger from sea to sea, wander to and fro, from north to east, searching for the word of Yahweh, but they will not find it.

PSALM: Psalms 119: 2, 10, 20, 30, 40, 131

2 Blessed are they who treasure his word and seek him with all their heart.
10 I seek you with my whole heart; let me not stray from your commands.
20 My soul is consumed with desire for your ordinances at all times.
30 I have chosen the way of truth; I have set my heart upon your laws.
40 Oh, how I long for your precepts! Renew my life in your righteousness.
131 I gasp in ardent yearning for your commandments that I love.

GOSPEL: Matthew 9: 9 - 13

9 As Jesus moved on from there, he saw a man named Matthew at his seat in the custom-house, and he said to him, "Follow me." And Matthew got up and followed him.
10 Now it happened, while Jesus was at table in Matthew's house, many tax collectors and other sinners joined Jesus and his disciples.
11 When the Pharisees saw this they said to his disciples, "Why is it that your master eats with those sinners and tax collectors?"
12 When Jesus heard this he said, "Healthy people do not need a doctor, but sick people do.
13 Go and find out what this means: What I want is mercy, not sacrifice. I did not come to call the righteous but sinners."

Catholic Mass Readings For Wednesday, July 02, 2014

FIRST READING: Amos 5: 14 - 15, 21 - 24

14 Seek good and shun evil, that you may live. Then Yahweh, the God of hosts, as you have claimed, will be with you.
15 Hate wickedness and love virtue, and let justice prevail in the courts; perhaps Yahweh, the God of hosts, will take pity on the remnant of Joseph.
21 "I hate, I reject your feasts, I take no pleasure when you assemble
22 to offer me your burnt offerings. Your cereal offerings, I will not accept! Your offerings of fattened beasts, I will not look upon!
23 Away with the noise of your chanting, away with your strumming on harps.
24 But let justice run its course like water, and righteousness be like an ever-flowing river.

PSALM: Psalms 50: 7 - 13, 16 - 17

7 "Hear, O my people, for I am speaking. I will accuse you, O Israel, I am God, your God!
8 Not for your sacrifices do I reprove you, for your burnt offerings are ever before me.
9 I need no bull from your stalls, nor he-goat from your pens.
10 For I own all the beasts of the forest and the animals of my thousand hills.
11 All the birds of the air I know; all that move in the fields are mine.
12 I need not tell you if I were hungry, for mine is the world and all that it contains.
13 Do I eat the flesh of bulls or drink the blood of goats?
16 But God says this to the wicked: "What right have you to mouth my laws, or to talk about my covenant?
17 You hate my commands and cast my words behind you.

GOSPEL: Matthew 8: 28 - 34

28 When Jesus reached Gadara on the other side, he was met by two demoniacs who came out from the tombs. They were so fierce that no one dared to pass that way.
29 Suddenly they shouted, "What do you want with us, you, Son of God? Have you come to torture us before the time?"
30 At some distance away there was a large herd of pigs feeding.
31 So the demons begged him, "If you drive us out, send us into that herd of pigs."
32 Jesus ordered them, "Go." So they left and went into the pigs. The whole herd rushed down the cliff into the lake and drowned.
33 The men in charge of them ran off to the town, where they told the whole story, also what had happened to the men possessed with the demons.
34 Then the whole town went out to meet Jesus; and when they saw him, they begged him to leave their area.

Catholic Mass Readings For Tuesday, July 01, 2014

FIRST READING: Amos 3: 1 - 8; 4: 11 - 12

1 Hear this word which Yahweh speaks against you, people of Israel, against the whole family which he brought up from the land of Egypt.
2 "Only you have I known of all the families of the earth; therefore I will call you to account for all your wrongdoings."
3 Do two walk together unless they have agreed?
4 Does a lion roar in the forest when it has no prey? Does a young lion growl in its den unless it has seized something?
5 Does a bird get caught in a snare if the snare has not been baited? Does a tiger spring up from the ground unless it has caught something?
6 If a trumpet sounds in a city, will the people not be frightened? If disaster strikes a city, has not Yahweh caused it?
7 Yet Yahweh does nothing without revealing his plan to his servants, the prophets.
8 If the lion roars, who will not be afraid? If Yahweh speaks, who will not prophesy?
11 "I overthrew you, a divine punishment, as happened to Sodom and Gomorrah; you were like a brand snatched from the blaze, yet you never returned to me," says Yahweh.
12 "Therefore I will deal with you in my own way, Israel, and since I will do this to you, prepare, Israel, to meet your God!"

PSALM: Psalms 5: 4 - 8

4 From daybreak you hear my voice, from dawn I am in your presence watching for you.
5 You are not a God who delights in wickedness; evil has no place in you.
6 The arrogant cannot stand before you. You hate all who do evil;
7 you destroy all who speak falsehood, who thirst for blood and live on lies; all of them the Lord detests.
8 But I, by your love and grace, may come into your house. In reverence I bow down and worship at your holy temple.

GOSPEL: Matthew 8: 23 - 27

23 Jesus got into the boat and his disciples followed him.
24 Without warning a fierce storm hit the lake, with waves sweeping the boat. But Jesus was asleep.
25 They woke him and cried, "Lord save us! We are lost!"
26 But Jesus answered, "Why are you so afraid, you of little faith?" Then he stood up and ordered the wind and sea; and it became completely calm.
27 The people were astonished. They said, "What kind of man is he? Even the winds and the sea obey him."

Catholic Mass Readings For Monday, June 30, 2014

FIRST READING: Amos 2: 6 - 10, 13 - 16

6 Yahweh says this, "Because Israel has sinned, not once but three times and even more, I will not relent. They sell the just for money and the needy for a pair of sandals;
7 they tread on the head of the poor and trample them upon the dust of the earth, while they silence the right of the afflicted; a man and his father go to the same woman to profane my holy name;
8 they stretch out upon garments taken in pledge, beside every altar; they take the wine of those they swindle and are drunk in the house of their God.
9 It was I who destroyed the Amorites before them, whose height was like the height of the cedar, a people as sturdy as an oak. I destroyed their fruit above and their roots below.
10 It was I who brought you up from the land of Egypt and led you forty years in the wilderness to take possession of the land of the Amorites.
13 Behold, I will crush you to the ground, as a cart does when it is full of sheaves.
14 The swift shall be unable to flee and the strong man shall lose his strength. The warrior shall not save himself nor the bowman stand his ground.
15 The swift of foot shall not escape nor the horseman save himself.
16 Even the most stout-hearted among the warriors shall flee away naked on that day," says Yahweh.

PSALM: Psalms 50: 16 - 23

16 But God says this to the wicked: "What right have you to mouth my laws, or to talk about my covenant?
17 You hate my commands and cast my words behind you.
18 You join a thief when you meet one; you keep company with adulterers.
19 You have a mouth of evil and a deceitful tongue.
20 You speak ill of your brother, and slander your own mother's son.
21 Because I was silent while you did these things, you thought I was like you. But now I rebuke you and make this charge against you.
22 Give this a thought, you who forget God, lest I tear you to pieces with no one to help you.
23 Those who give with thanks offerings honor me, but the one who walks blamelessly, I will show him the salvation of God."

GOSPEL: Matthew 8: 18 - 22

18 When he saw the crowd press around him, Jesus gave orders to cross to the other shore.
19 A teacher of the Law approached him and said, "Master, I will follow you wherever you go."
20 Jesus said to him, "Foxes have holes and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head."
21 Another disciple said to him, "Lord, let me go and bury my father first."
22 But Jesus answered him, "Follow me, and let the dead bury their own dead."

Luke 16: 19 - 31
"The Poor Lazarus at the Rich Man’s Door" -- by James Tissot (1886-1894) [Click image to view full size]

FIRST READING: Amos 6: 1, 4 - 7

1 Woe to you that are wealthy in Sion, and to you that have confidence in the mountain of Samaria: ye great men, heads of the people, that go in with state into the house of Israel.
4 You that sleep upon beds of ivory, and are wanton on your couches: that eat the lambs out of the flock, and the calves out of the midst of the herd;
5 You that sing to the sound of the psaltery: they have thought themselves to have instruments of music like David;
6 That drink wine in bowls, and anoint themselves with the best ointments: and they are not concerned for the affliction of Joseph.
7 Wherefore now they shall go captive at the head of them that go into captivity: and the faction of the luxurious ones shall be taken away.

PSALM: Psalms 146: 7 - 10

7 Who keepeth truth for ever: who executeth judgment for them that suffer wrong: who giveth food to the hungry. The Lord looseth them that are fettered:
8 The Lord enlighteneth the blind. The Lord lifteth up them that are cast down: the Lord loveth the just.
9 The Lord keepeth the strangers, he will support the fatherless and the widow: and the ways of sinners he will destroy.
10 The Lord shall reign for ever: thy God, O Sion, unto generation and generation.

SECOND READING: 1 Timothy 6: 11 - 16

11 But thou, O man of God, fly these things: and pursue justice, godliness, faith, charity, patience, mildness.
12 Fight the good fight of faith: lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art called, and hast confessed a good confession before many witnesses.
13 I charge thee before God, who quickeneth all things, and before Christ Jesus, who gave testimony under Pontius Pilate, a good confession,
14 That thou keep the commandment without spot, blameless, unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ,
15 Which in his times he shall shew who is the Blessed and only Mighty, the King of kings, and Lord of lords;
16 Who only hath immortality, and inhabiteth light inaccessible, whom no man hath seen, nor can see: to whom be honour and empire everlasting. Amen.

GOSPEL: Luke 16: 19 - 31

19 There was a certain rich man, who was clothed in purple and fine linen; and feasted sumptuously every day.
20 And there was a certain beggar, named Lazarus, who lay at his gate, full of sores,
21 Desiring to be filled with the crumbs that fell from the rich man's table, and no one did give him; moreover the dogs came, and licked his sores.
22 And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom. And the rich man also died: and he was buried in hell.
23 And lifting up his eyes when he was in torments, he saw Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom:
24 And he cried, and said: Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, to cool my tongue: for I am tormented in this flame.
25 And Abraham said to him: Son, remember that thou didst receive good things in thy lifetime, and likewise Lazareth evil things, but now he is comforted; and thou art tormented.
26 And besides all this, between us and you, there is fixed a great chaos: so that they who would pass from hence to you, cannot, nor from thence come hither.
27 And he said: Then, father, I beseech thee, that thou wouldst send him to my father's house, for I have five brethren,
28 That he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torments.
29 And Abraham said to him: They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them.
30 But he said: No, father Abraham: but if one went to them from the dead, they will do penance.
31 And he said to him: If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they believe, if one rise again from the dead.

Sunday Catholic Mass Readings For September 22, 2013

"The Parable of the Unjust Steward"  -- by Jan Luyken [Click image for full size view]

FIRST READING: Amos 8: 4 - 7

4 Hear this, you that crush the poor, and make the needy of the land to fail,
5 Saying: When will the month be over, and we shall sell our wares: and the sabbath, and we shall open the corn: that we may lessen the measure, and increase the sicle, and may convey in deceitful balances,
6 That we may possess the needy for money, and the poor for a pair of shoes, and may sell the refuse of the corn?
7 The Lord hath sworn against the pride of Jacob: surely I will never forget all their works.

PSALM: Psalms 113: 1 - 2, 4 - 8

1 Praise the Lord, ye children: praise ye the name of the Lord.
2 Blessed be the name of the Lord, from henceforth now and for ever.
4 The Lord is high above all nations; and his glory above the heavens.
5 Who is as the Lord our God, who dwelleth on high:
6 And looketh down on the low things in heaven and in earth?
7 Raising up the needy from the earth, and lifting up the poor out of the dunghill:
8 That he may place him with princes, with the princes of his people.

SECOND READING: 1 Timothy 2: 1 - 8

1 I desire therefore, first of all, that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all men:
2 For kings, and for all that are in high station: that we may lead a quiet and a peaceable life in all piety and chastity.
3 For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour,
4 Who will have all men to be saved, and to come to the knowledge of the truth.
5 For there is one God, and one mediator of God and men, the man Christ Jesus:
6 Who gave himself a redemption for all, a testimony in due times.
7 Whereunto I am appointed a preacher and an apostle, (I say the truth, I lie not,) a doctor of the Gentiles in faith and truth.
8 I will therefore that men pray in every place, lifting up pure hands, without anger and contention.

GOSPEL: Luke 16: 1 - 13

1 And he said also to his disciples: There was a certain rich man who had a steward: and the same was accused unto him, that he had wasted his goods.
2 And he called him, and said to him: How is it that I hear this of thee? give an account of thy stewardship: for now thou canst be steward no longer.
3 And the steward said within himself: What shall I do, because my lord taketh away from me the stewardship? To dig I am not able; to beg I am ashamed.
4 I know what I will do, that when I shall be removed from the stewardship, they may receive me into their houses.
5 Therefore calling together every one of his lord's debtors, he said to the first: How much dost thou owe my lord?
6 But he said: An hundred barrels of oil. And he said to him: Take thy bill and sit down quickly, and write fifty.
7 Then he said to another: And how much dost thou owe? Who said: An hundred quarters of wheat. He said to him: Take thy bill, and write eighty.
8 And the lord commended the unjust steward, forasmuch as he had done wisely: for the children of this world are wiser in their generation than the children of light.
9 And I say to you: Make unto you friends of the mammon of iniquity; that when you shall fail, they may receive you into everlasting dwellings.
10 He that is faithful in that which is least, is faithful also in that which is greater: and he that is unjust in that which is little, is unjust also in that which is greater.
11 If then you have not been faithful in the unjust mammon; who will trust you with that which is the true?
12 And if you have not been faithful in that which is another's; who will give you that which is your own?
13 No servant can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or he will hold to the one, and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon.

Mass Readings For Saturday, May 04, 2013

Saturday of the Fifth Week of Easter

FIRST READING: Acts 16: 1 - 10

1 And he came to Derbe and Lystra. And behold, there was a certain disciple there named Timothy, the son of a Jewish woman that believed; but his father was a Gentile.
2 To this man the brethren that were in Lystra and Iconium, gave a good testimony.
3 Him Paul would have to go along with him: and taking him he circumcised him, because of the Jews who were in those places. For they all knew that his father was a Gentile.
4 And as they passed through the cities, they delivered unto them the decrees for to keep, that were decreed by the apostles and ancients who were at Jerusalem.
5 And the churches were confirmed in faith, and increased in number daily.
6 And when they had passed through Phrygia, and the country of Galatia, they were forbidden by the Holy Ghost to preach the word in Asia.
7 And when they were come into Mysia, they attempted to go into Bythynia, and the Spirit of Jesus suffered them not.
8 And when they had passed through Mysia, they went down to Troas.
9 And a vision was shewed to Paul in the night, which was a man of Macedonia standing and beseeching him, and saying: Pass over into Macedonia, and help us.
10 And as soon as he had seen the vision, immediately we sought to go into Macedonia, being assured that God had called us to preach the gospel to them.

PSALM: Psalms 100: 1 - 3, 5

1 Sing joyfully to God, all the earth:
2 serve ye the Lord with gladness. Come in before his presence with exceeding great joy.
3 Know ye that the Lord he is God: he made us, and not we ourselves. We are his people and the sheep of his pasture.
5 For the Lord is sweet, his mercy endureth for ever, and his truth to generation and generation.

GOSPEL: John 15: 18 - 21

18 If the world hate you, know ye, that it hath hated me before you.
19 If you had been of the world, the world would love its own: but because you are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you.
20 Remember my word that I said to you: The servant is not greater than his master. If they have persecuted me, they will also persecute you: if they have kept my word, they will keep yours also.
21 But all these things they will do to you for my name's sake: because they know not him who sent me.

Sunday Mass Readings For July 15, 2012

FIRST READING: Amos 7: 12 - 15

12 And Amazi'ah said to Amos, "O seer, go, flee away to the land of Judah, and eat bread there, and prophesy there;
13 but never again prophesy at Bethel, for it is the king's sanctuary, and it is a temple of the kingdom."
14 Then Amos answered Amazi'ah, "I am no prophet, nor a prophet's son; but I am a herdsman, and a dresser of sycamore trees,
15 and the LORD took me from following the flock, and the LORD said to me, `Go, prophesy to my people Israel.'

PSALM: Psalms 85: 9 - 14

9 Surely his salvation is at hand for those who fear him, that glory may dwell in our land.
10 Steadfast love and faithfulness will meet; righteousness and peace will kiss each other.
11 Faithfulness will spring up from the ground, and righteousness will look down from the sky.
12 Yea, the LORD will give what is good, and our land will yield its increase.
13 Righteousness will go before him, and make his footsteps a way.

SECOND READING: Ephesians 1: 3 - 14 Or Ephesians 1: 3 - 10

3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places,
4 even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him.
5 He destined us in love to be his sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will,
6 to the praise of his glorious grace which he freely bestowed on us in the Beloved.
7 In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace
8 which he lavished upon us.
9 For he has made known to us in all wisdom and insight the mystery of his will, according to his purpose which he set forth in Christ
10 as a plan for the fullness of time, to unite all things in him, things in heaven and things on earth.
11 In him, according to the purpose of him who accomplishes all things according to the counsel of his will,
12 we who first hoped in Christ have been destined and appointed to live for the praise of his glory.
13 In him you also, who have heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and have believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit,
14 which is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory.

Or

10 as a plan for the fulness of time, to unite all things in him, things in heaven and things on earth.

GOSPEL: Mark 6: 7 - 13

7 And he called to him the twelve, and began to send them out two by two, and gave them authority over the unclean spirits.
8 He charged them to take nothing for their journey except a staff; no bread, no bag, no money in their belts;
9 but to wear sandals and not put on two tunics.
10 And he said to them, "Where you enter a house, stay there until you leave the place.
11 And if any place will not receive you and they refuse to hear you, when you leave, shake off the dust that is on your feet for a testimony against them."
12 So they went out and preached that men should repent.
13 And they cast out many demons, and anointed with oil many that were sick and healed them.
